Consultation information
We want to know if residents in parts of Surrey Heath, that don’t currently have a parish council, would like one.
What is a parish council?
A parish council is the most local level of government, representing a specific community, focusing on local issues.
It manages community amenities such as allotments, village greens, cemeteries and community centres, supporting projects like play areas, footpaths, and community events.
It can also represent your community’s voice to the new West Surrey Council, which will be created from 2027 onwards.
Why have a parish council?
- Local decisions - residents have a greater say on how money is spent and more say on local issues
- Better care for public spaces - parish councils can look after parks, play areas, and community halls and problems get fixed faster
- Community projects and grants - can apply for extra funding and support local events, youth activities, and green projects
- Stronger community identity - gives your area a clear voice and encourages local pride and volunteering
What options are being considered?
Option 1
The creation of four new parish councils:
- Camberley Town Council (the current borough wards of St Michaels, Town, Old Dean, Watchetts and St Pauls)
- Heatherside & Deepcut Parish Council (includes the Wellington Estate, Prior Road Estate, Youlden Drive and Camberley Heath Golf Course)
- Frimley and Parkside Parish Council
- Frimley Green and Mytchett Parish Council
Option 2
The creation of two parish councils:
- Camberley Town Council (the current borough wards of St Michaels, Town, Old Dean, Watchetts and St Pauls)
- Frimley Community Council - Frimley, Frimley Green, Heatherside, Parkside, Deepcut & Mytchett
Costs
A parish council is funded through a small additional charge on your Council Tax, called a precept.
For example, this might be around £50–£65 per household each year—roughly £1 a week.
All of this money stays in your local community to support things like park maintenance and community events.
With vs without a parish council
With a Parish Council:
Decisions are made locally, by people who know and understand the community. This helps ensure local priorities are met and strengthens a sense of community identity.
Without a Parish Council:
Decisions would be made by the new unitary authority, which may be further removed from local concerns and provide less direct representation for your area.
Considerations
This decision could affect how local services are managed and how your community’s voice is represented in the future.
