Street naming and numbering (SNN) is a statutory function of local authorities.

We have a legal responsibility to name and number streets and to approve and register official property addresses. 

Street naming and property numbering guidance

Before submitting an application for a new development or address amendment, please read the street naming and property numbering guidance. This includes information about: 

  • naming new streets and numbering properties on those streets
  • naming and numbering new properties or sub-divisions of existing properties
  • naming, renaming or renumbering existing properties
  • renaming or renumbering existing streets
  • amending addresses due to internal or external development work resulting in a change of access
