Information about self-build and custom housebuilding and how to register your interest in such a project.

How to apply

To register your interest in a self-build or custom housebuilding plot as an individual or as an association, you must complete the online application form below and pay the relevant fee

Completed applications will enable an assessment of the level of interest to be made for self-build or custom-build homes in Surrey Heath.

Fees must be paid at the same time that you complete your application. If payment is not made, the application will not be accepted and the information will not be added to the register.

Next steps

A successful application entitles the individual or association group to be entered onto the register. Applications do not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified or become available. 

The Planning Policy team will review each application.  If an application is refused, a refund will be processed accordingly.  

Applications must contain details of your name, address, date of birth, nationality and confirmation that you are seeking a plot of land to construct a self-build or custom-build house as your sole or main residence.

Data Protection Act 2018

The information provided and any personal or financial information subsequently gathered in regards to your application will be held securely by Surrey Heath Borough Council for the purposes of registering applicants as showing interest in self-build and custom housebuilding within the Borough of Surrey Heath.  The information held may be used by the Council and other public bodies that have a duty to have regard to information contained in the self-build register in undertaking their services and functions.  The register will not be publicly available, but some anonymised data, such as the number of successful entries on the register may be published.  

You have the right to opt-out of your information being used and stored by the Council for the purposes of the Self-Building Register at any time. To opt-out email selfbuild@surreyheath.gov.uk (link sends e-mail).

Data retention

The personal information you provide to the Council for the purposes of the self-build register will be retained for a period of 6 years. Following 6 years, you will be asked if you wish to remain on the register. If you request to be removed or you do not respond, you will be removed from the register and your personal data will be deleted at the next data cleanse.  If you wish to remain on the register, your data will be held for a further 6 years. Find out more about how the Council shares and uses personal information and data.
