Surrey Heath Borough Council is pleased to announce the successful completion of Phase 2 roof repair works at The Square shopping centre, alongside a comprehensive annual review of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) systems across the site.

The roof works have focused on reducing water ingress throughout the centre, significantly improving conditions for both shoppers and retailers. These repairs have greatly reduced the need for temporary measures, such as buckets in mall areas, helping to provide a more welcoming and reliable shopping environment.

Councillor Kel Finan-Cooke, Portfolio Holder for Property and Economic Development at Surrey Heath Borough Council, said:

“As owners of The Square, the council is committed to ensuring it offers a pleasant and safe experience for visitors and the businesses operating within it. This means maintaining the centre to a high standard.

“We know the centre has experienced leaks during periods of wet weather, so we’re delighted that the roof is now significantly more weatherproof. This improvement has been achieved through a combination of regular maintenance and major repair works, backed by substantial financial investment from Surrey Heath Borough Council.”

While a small number of minor leaks remain from sections of the glass roof, these will be addressed as part of the next phase of roof works.

In addition to the roof repairs, maintenance at the centre has been enhanced this year through a full overhaul of the heating systems, providing a more comfortable environment for shoppers and visitors—particularly those enjoying the new Central Square food and beverage offerings.

Looking ahead, Surrey Heath Borough Council is preparing to progress to the next phase of major works, which will include:

  • Continued roof repairs across the centre
  • Refurbishment of the smoke ventilation system
  • Installation of solar panels to strengthen The Square’s green credentials for years to come.

These investments form part of the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting the long-term viability, sustainability and success of The Square shopping centre.
