Proposed new Camberley pump track - have your say!

Surrey Heath Borough Council is currently creating a new concrete skate park at Crabtree Recreation Ground, Camberley.

Alongside this, the council is considering whether a pump track could be provided alongside the new skate park, creating an accessible larger-wheeled sports facility for the local community.

Before deciding whether to progress the pump track proposal, we are asking for the views of local residents, young people, families, existing users of Crabtree Recreation Ground and the wider community. A pump track is an inclusive, all-ages facility that can be used by cyclists, skateboarders, scooter riders, skaters and wheelchair users.

If the project goes ahead, it will be funded by money from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Fund, rather than day-to-day council budgets.

At the September meeting of the Council Executive, £300,000 was reserved from the CIL Main Fund for a new pump track at Crabtree Recreation Ground. This was on the condition that public consultation take place about the project, with the feedback received helping to shape future decisions about the plan.

Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Environment & Recreation Cllr Morgan Rise said: "The new skate park at Crabtree Recreation Ground is already approved, and this proposed pump track at the same site could be another exciting addition to our leisure facilities in Surrey Heath. The location selected means it is well-placed to attract a wide reach of users.

"We have reserved funding for the project from the CIL Fund, which is made up of contributions from developers. But before this project is given the go ahead, we would like to hear your views on whether you think a pump track would be a valuable new facility at Crabtree Recreation Ground.

"Have your say before the deadline of 3 December."

Notes for Editors:

  • A pump track is a looping circuit of small bumps called rollers and banked turns called berms that users can ride without pedaling. Instead of pushing pedals, users generate momentum by using an up-and-down "pumping" motion with their body, pushing down into the dips and pulling up over the crests.
  • Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding consists of ringfenced payments made by developers for development taking place in the borough. The money is used to help build and improve the infrastructure our communities need to grow and thrive.
