Surrey Heath Borough Council planted a record number of 6,000 trees last year.

Supported by Surrey Heath Tree Wardens (SHTW), the council achieved its target of planting 6,000 trees from April 2024-March 2025.

This is 1,000 trees more than the previous year’s total of 5,000, an increase of 20%.

Locations where the trees have been planted include Lightwater Country Park, Windlemere SANG, Frimley Green Recreation Ground, Frimley Lodge Park & St Catherine’s SANG.

Species planted include native deciduous trees such as hawthorn, blackthorn, sweet chestnut, oak, silver birch, sycamore, hazel, spindle and rowan. An orchard of 50 fruit trees was planted at Windlemere, in association with SHTW and West End Village Society. Varieties include cherry, apple, pear, walnut and quince.

Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Environment and Recreation Cllr Morgan Rise said: “This excellent tree planting work by our Greenspace team and Surrey Heath Tree Wardens across the borough supports our priority of protecting the environment, continuing to increase biodiversity and drive towards net zero.

“We are incredibly proud of the trees we have in Surrey Heath. By continuing to increase and maintain our trees, we are upholding our commitment to protect and improve our greenspaces, which I know residents and visitors really value.”

Surrey Heath is proud to have the highest percentage of tree coverage in the country, at 36.1%.
