The sale of a plot of land housing a former scout hut has been approved by the council Executive.
The 0.73 acre site at Longmeadow, Frimley includes the dilapidated building which is considered to be beyond economic repair. It has pedestrian access only, which restricts future occupation and development.
The site has been empty and secured since the former tenant vacated in 2022.
The surrounding area is residential with no off-street parking, therefore it is unlikely that planning consent for a community use would be granted.
A thorough review of all council assets is underway to ensure optimal use and therefore value for money for Surrey Heath residents.
Financial outlay on the building by the council is not considered prudent, so a sale is proposed at a level which will allow the council’s debt interest costs to be reduced by repaying external debt.
The alternative would be to continue to keep the building and land vacant.
An auction with a reserve price based on that provided by an external agent was recommended as the most efficient way to achieve the best price for the plot.
Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Property and Economic Development Cllr Kel Finan-Cooke said: “This land has limited future uses because of its location, access and lack of facilities. Given the challenging financial situation faced by the council, we do not consider spending money on this property to be a sensible use of taxpayers’ money, therefore putting it up for sale is the best option.
“If a sale goes ahead, the money received will be used to reduce the council’s outstanding debt, therefore reducing our interest payment costs, which is a key element of our Transformation Programme and Medium-Term Financial Strategy.”
