A special flag raising event and two minutes silence was held for 999 Emergency Services Day at 9am on Monday 9 September 2024 at Surrey Heath House.

The event was hosted by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Sarbie Kang, and attended by Surrey Heath Borough councillors, Surrey Police officers including Surrey Heath Borough Commander Inspector Gemma Taylor, members of the Surrey Heath Faith Forum, council officers and members of the public.

The two minutes silence remembers all emergency service workers who have been killed as a result of their service to our nation.

The Mayor gave a speech paying tribute to all emergency workers, as did Honorary Alderman and former firefighter Alan Whittart.

Cllr Kang said: “We are so lucky in Surrey Heath to have such incredible emergency services teams – every day they demonstrate amazing dedication, bravery and care, and today we pay tribute to them.

“By raising this flag, we recognise all blue light workers and their fantastic commitment – and those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. I’d like to say a huge thank you to each and every member of the emergency services, 999 volunteers and first responders – both personally, and on behalf of the borough.”

National Emergency Services Day was founded in 2016 and is a national day across the UK, supported by His Majesty the King, HRH The Prince of Wales, the Prime Minister and First Ministers of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
