What you need to apply

Applicants must be:

• over 21
• have held a full driver's licence (issued by DVLA or European Union Country) for at least 12 months
• obtain a check code from DVLA website (external link) so that your driving record can be checked

In addition to completing an application form, you will need:

• Enhanced Criminal Convictions Disclosure. Please apply for a DBS certificate using the TaxiPlus website (external link). If you have any questions about obtaining a DBS check then please visit the FAQs page on the TaxiPlus website (external link).
• Drivers will be required to register their DBS certificate with the DBS update service on the GOV.UK website (external link).
• Evidence of your right to work and remain in the UK for a minimum of 12 months. More information on how to prove your right to work can be found on the GOV.UK website (external link).
• All applicants must satisfy DVLA Group 2 standards. Download the below medical report and take it to your GP to complete.  Drivers who are not medically fit will not be issued a licence.

• You must inform us if you have certain medical condition. View a list of health conditions you must tell us about on GOV.UK website (external link).

• Successfully complete Taxi Safeguarding training. You can complete this on the taxi safeguarding section of the BLT Driver Training website (external link).
• 1 passport sized photograph taken within 1 month of the application.

• Applications to renew licences must be submitted at least one month before the current expiry date.
• Drivers must notify the council, in writing and within seven days, if they acquire any points on their driving licence, or they change their address.
• Drivers should return their badge to the Council upon renewal or if they stop working for a private hire operator.
• Medical examinations can last for up to three years, but this is dependent on the doctors' evaluation of the driver.
• Drivers over 65 years will be required to have a medical every year.
