Council Tax appeals

How to appeal against your Council Tax bill.

Please contact the Revenues and Benefits team if you think your Council Tax bill is wrong for the below reasons:

  • we have sent the bill to the wrong person for your home
  • your home should be exempt from Council Tax
  • the amount is wrong, for example if you think you are entitled to a discount or we haven't
  • reduced the bill for a disability

Please include your name, address and the reasons why you think your bill is wrong.

You must still keep your payments up to date until your appeal is decided.

Appeal against your Council Tax band

If you think your Council Tax valuation band is wrong, you need to contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) is responsible for valuing all domestic properties.

This service is free. If you are successful, we will be informed by the Valuation Office and your Council Tax account will then be updated and a revised bill issued.

You can Contact VOA online via the GOV.UK website (external link) or by telephone on 03000 501 501. If you decide to appeal against your Council Tax band, you must continue to pay your bill until your appeal is decided.
