Our role in an emergency

Find out about the Council's responsibilities during a major incident.

We work to ensure that if a major incident occurs in the county, the people of Surrey are protected and essential services are restored as quickly as possible. This work involves emergency planning and business continuity.

Emergency planning is at the heart of the civil protection duty placed on local authorities, the emergency services and other category one responders. Under this duty, local authorities are required to maintain plans for preventing and preparing for incidents, including reducing, controlling or mitigating the effects of incidents.

We work with different partners in a local resilience forum to ensure that plans are in place.

Partners include:

  • emergency services
  • district and borough councils
  • health partners
  • voluntary and private organisations
  • government agencies

Surrey Community Risk Register

The Surrey Community Risk Register has been created to provide public information about the hazards that exist within the County and the control measures that are in place to mitigate their impact. The register has been published in response to the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

You can view the Surrey Community Risk Register on the Surrey County Council website (external link).
