Local Government Reorganisation consultation

Have your say on the future of local government in Surrey

On Friday 9 May, all district and borough councils across Surrey – alongside Surrey County Council – submitted their final proposals for local government reorganisation to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Following this, the government has opened a formal statutory consultation, running for seven weeks until Tuesday 5 August.

Residents, community groups and other stakeholders are encouraged to share their views through Citizen Space.

Although not a conventional public consultation, this process invites public feedback on two reorganisation options:

  • A two-unitary model put forward by Surrey County Council
  • A three-unitary model backed by nine of the district and borough councils

Both models are financially viable and hinge on the central government taking action to address Surrey’s long-term debt challenges, particularly in Woking and Spelthorne.

The three-unitary proposal provides a stronger long-term foundation for high-quality local government, including:

  • Stronger public services designed around local needs
  • Better alignment with local identities and communities
  • Greater opportunities for economic growth and infrastructure delivery
  • More responsive and accountable local governance.

Surrey’s local government landscape is set to change – now’s your chance to help shape its future. Visit the consultation below and share your views before the deadline.
