Dealing with builders and architects can become a very daunting process but HIA can take much of the worry and strain away from you.
The Home Improvement Agency is a small not-for-profit funded organisation and supported by local and central government. We offer advice, support and assistance to elderly, disabled and vulnerable people who privately rent or own and live in their own property and who wish to repair, improve or adapt them in order to be able to stay in their own homes.
The case worker will help you through the whole process helping you to get a professional assessment of your needs, explaining the ways in which a scheme can be financed and assisting in filling in the forms and giving advice about your entitlement to benefits. When the finances have been arranged and the scheme decided upon, the rest of the team will draw up plans and specifications of work. If necessary they will obtain Planning and Building Control approval. They will invite estimates from reliable builders who have previously worked for the Council. They will then supervise the work until it is completed. (A fee of 16% of the costs of the work is charged for the service of the agency but this can be added to the grant or the loan.)
