Not only does shopping locally support your community and local economy, it massively helps reduce the impact shopping has on the environment. Buying locally means our products don't have to travel as far. Food products in our aisles are often transported to us via air, sea or land and the journeys use enormous amounts of fossil fuels.
Shopping locally means you can get there easily – on foot, by bicycle, or public transport. Walking to your local facilities reduces your carbon footprint by reducing the greenhouse gases you would have emitted. Car emissions account for 15% of the UK’s overall carbon emissions according to the Energy Saving Trust – that’s 85 million tonnes – and many of those journeys are not actually necessary.
Shopping locally enriches your shopping experience and allows you to find more unique items from independent retailers which aren’t mass-produced.
