Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme
Make Steve Smile in 2022!
More than 1,300 Christmas trees were collected for recycling in Surrey Heath in January 2021, helping to make our Greenspace team leader Steve smile from ear to ear!
The face of our real Christmas tree recycling scheme is hoping for an even bigger number of trees to be collected this time around – so bring your trees to one of our 15 free recycling points from 4-16 January 2022 and help #MakeSteveSmile!
Once collected, the trees will be chipped, with the woodchips used to top up paths in our beautiful parks and green spaces.
For more information including the locations where you can drop off your tree, check out the Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme page.

The Queen's Green Canopy
What is the Queen’s Green Canopy
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. With a focus on planting sustainably, everyone from individuals to community groups across the United Kingdom are invited to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
How Can you Get Involved?
Everyone in Surrey Heath is welcomed to get involved and enhance our local environment by planting trees. The first official planting season will run between October 2021 to March 2022 and will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.
Once planted, trees can be added to the Queen’s Green Canopy Map
We will be hosting events relating to the Queen’s Green Canopy so keep an eye on our website and social media to find out more.
Advice for Tree Planting
It is important to select the right species and appropriate place for tree planting:
Funding opportunities for Tree Planting
Funding is available for tree planting by schools and community groups:
- Woodland Trust - Free Trees for Schools and Communities
- Tree Council - Branching Out Fund
- Tree Council Orchards for Schools
- Earth Watch - Tiny Forest
As well as encouraging the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
