SHBC Greenspace team leader Steve Harris is the face of the environmentally-friendly scheme, which encourages local people to recycle their trees and #MakeSteveSmile.
The scheme, which offered 15 drop off sites across the Borough from 4-16 January, collected the impressive total of more than 3,000 trees from local people – more than double the previous highest total of 1,395.
Those trees are being turned into wood chippings and will be used to replenish the paths in our beautiful green spaces across the Borough.
Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Places and Strategy Cllr Rebecca Jennings-Evans said: “Now in its sixth year, our free Christmas tree recycling scheme continues to be really popular – as the record total of more than 3,000 trees shows! cartoon Greenspace team leader, Steve
“Over the past two years, people have appreciated the importance of the great outdoors even more, so it’s fantastic to be able to offer this truly green initiative which has multiple benefits - for residents, our parks and the environment in general.
“I’d like to thank everyone who dropped off their real Christmas tree to be recycled, and also congratulate the council’s Greenspace team who do a great job organising the scheme.”
There are plans to run the scheme again in January 2023.
