Council Tax Guide - Department Costs Clarification

Residents in Surrey Heath recently received their council tax bills for the coming year.  A guide to how council tax is allocated and how Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC) spend their proportion of the tax collected was included with the mailing.

We would like to clarify the figures referred to in the 'Chief Executive' line in the Cost of Services table. 

The Chief Executive's basic salary for 2021/22 is £118k per annum.   This salary can only increase in future years in line with the Council's established pay policy and can only be approved by the Council’s Employment Committee. Full Council is notified of these decisions after which the minutes are published.

The figures in the table relate to the costs for the Chief Executives Department as a whole so includes more than just the Chief Executives salary. Following the restructure of the Corporate Management Team, which resulted in a saving of £279,623, costs previously accounted for in other departments have been re-allocated to the Chief Executives department increasing the 2021/22 figure of £162,000 to £236,000 in 2022/23.
