The Regenerate Award recognises Local Authorities redefining placemaking excellence.

Surrey Heath Borough Council has been recognised by Revo for the regeneration projects in Camberley town centre.  These began with The Atrium, a large mixed-use scheme built on a seven acre site which completely transformed the Park Street side of Camberley.  The Atrium completed in 2008 and brought homes, a cinema, shops and restaurants to this part of Camberley.  Park Street was also greatly improved with pedestrianisation, and the creation of seating and spill out areas for the restaurants occupying this area.  SHBC’s current projects include the purchase and subsequent £8million refurbishment of The Square shopping centre, ensuring the centre remains an attractive place for shoppers to visit and for retail businesses to thrive.  The conversion of Ashwood House, a former office building purchased by SHBC to enable its redevelopment, is also well underway which will bring 116 new apartments to Camberley and a new retail space.   Substantial projects to improve the town centre car parks, Princess Way and the High Street have also begun. SHBC is also in the final stages of securing a developer partner for a 5.5 acre site on the top of town between Park Street and the High Street for a significant mixed use scheme of retail, residential, leisure and public realm.

Councillor Moira Gibson, Leader, Surrey Heath Borough Council said; “We are committed to Camberley town centre and driving forward positive change and developments that support the town and its economic prosperity. This recognition from Revo is a great endorsement for our regeneration schemes.”

Karen Whelan, CEO, Surrey Heath Borough Council said; “We are absolutely thrilled that Camberley has been shortlisted for this award.  It is a wonderful recognition for our town and the regeneration projects.  As a Local Authority we are in the unique position to understand the needs of our local communities and delivering developments that are required by the area.  We are a small town in comparison to the other towns and cities shortlisted for this award, but we believe that in this instance small is beautiful and Camberley is a strong contender.”
