The Sports Council was formed in 2001 to act as a voice and offer support to the Surrey Heath sporting community. The Sports Council is made up of appointed members from all sections of this community and includes representatives from the Borough Council, Schools, Community Sports Organisations and the County Sports Partnership. The Borough Council grant aids to the Sports Council and in turn the Sports Council grant aids to local sports groups and individuals. The Sports Council meet quarterly and all sports organisations actively operating or intending to operate within the Borough can apply for membership.
Objectives
The Sports Council's objectives are:
- To promote, support and encourage participation in all forms of sports as recognised by Sport England
- To provide grants to talented athletes, coaches and people who find financial constraints a barrier to participation
Grants
The Sports Council provide four different grants of up to £250:
Club Grant
Grants are awarded to clubs, teams or organisations primarily towards the cost of specialist equipment with the objective of benefiting or improving membership. The applicant(s) must operate in and benefit the residents of Surrey Heath
Talented Individual Grant
Grants are awarded to talented athletes who live in Surrey Heath and are county or national representatives. The grants can be used to cover the cost of travel, coaching, equipment and membership .The applicant must live in Surrey Heath and evidence county or national playing standard
Coach Education Grant
Grants are awarded to coaches wanting to achieve recognised national governing body qualifications. The applicant(s) must live in Surrey Heath and use the grant for the benefit of Surrey Heath clubs/residents
Financial Support Grant
Grants are awarded to those where cost is the main barrier to sport. The applicant must demonstrate that they fulfil one of the following: on jobseekers allowance, incapacity benefits or free school meals
The Wall of Fame
Dan Jones - 17, from Frimley Green is part of British Sailing's youth windsurfing regional development squad. He took up the sport aged 14 after a holiday in Greece and joined a youth windsurfing club in Portsmouth shortly after. He has been competing both locally and nationally and recently became South region champion for his class.
Charlotte Dannatt - England Athletics representative. Achieved 3rd place at National U20 championships for 3000m in 2018. Number one ranked female runner for 5000m in England.
Grace Titheridge - British Gymnastics NDP6 15-16 National Champion
Samantha Taylor - Great Britain Age Group Triathlon squad and World Championship qualifier
Harry Dugmore - England U18's Rugby Union
