Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences - RIDDOR

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1995) places a duty on employers, the self-employed and the 'Responsible Person (those in control of work premises) to report serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (or 'near misses').

Incidents that are reportable include:

  • Death
  • Major Injury
  • Dangerous Occurrence
  • Member of the public taken from your premises to hospital
  • A work related injury that lasts over 7 days
  • A work related disease

(A) It is a legal requirement as stated in RIDDOR to immediately report a:

  • Death
  • Major Injury
  • Dangerous Occurrence
  • Member of the public taken to hospital as a result of a workplace injury

Fatal and major injuries and incidents can be reported to HSE's Incident Contact Centre by telephone on 0845 300 9923

(B) An injury or disease that lasts over 7 days or a work related disease should be reported within 10 days.

This must be done via the internet at www.hse.gov.uk/riddor

  • F2508A Report of a Case of Disease
  • OIR9B Report of an Injury Offshore
  • OIR9B Report of a Dangerous Occurrence Offshore
  • F2508G1 Report of a Flammable Gas Incident
  • F2508G2 Report of a Dangerous Gas Fitting

The chance of a workplace accident occurring should be greatly reduced if you have all the necessary safe working procedures and controls in place. Completing a risk assessment will help you do this.
