Listed Buildings

St Michael's C of E Church A Statutory Listed Building is a "building of special architectural or historic interest". From 1 April 2005, English Heritage is the organisation responsible for the administration of the listing system. A listed building may be Grade I, Grade II* or Grade II and the term 'listed building' includes:

  • Both the interior and exterior of the building
  • Any objects or structures fixed to the building
  • Any detached objects or structures within the curtilage of the building which have formed part of the land since 1 July 1948. This can include features such as boundary walls, outbuildings, gates, lamp-posts and even garden statues. Sometimes such features may be entered separately on the list.

Listing gives a building statutory protection against unauthorised demolition, alteration and extension. It is an integral part of the system for managing change to our environment through the planning process administered by local planning authorities and Department for Communities and Local Government. You cannot alter or demolish a Listed Building without permission from Surrey Heath Borough Council. There are also some buildings in the Borough which are classified as Locally Listed Buildings.
