Conservation Areas
A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. There are currently nine conservation areas designated in Surrey Heath. These are:
Plans showing properties included within a conservation area can be seen at Planning Reception at our offices. They can also be seen on the Local Plan Proposals Map on this web site, (although it should be noted the Upper Gordon Road to ChurchHill conservation area has been amended since the proposals map was produced).
The Surrey Heath Local Plan provides the statutory planning framework for development within conservation areas. Greater control is exercised over development within conservation areas. In particular there are additional controls over demolition. Proposals for demolition may require an application to the local planning authority for conservation area consent. Additional protection is given to trees.
Subject to financial resources being available, discretionary grants may be available from the Surrey Historic Buildings Trust for certain repairs to both listed and unlisted buildings in conservation areas. Further details may be obtained through Surrey County Council,
