The Department for Communities and Local Government, DCLG, have published a consultation paper on the future of Building Control. This consultation paper sets out and seeks views on proposals by Government for changes to the building control system in England and Wales. The consultation closes on the 10 June 2008.
The changes proposed in this document are designed to address weaknesses in the current system, as identified by users of the system and the building control industry itself. They are intended to both improve compliance with the Building Regulations and further reduce the burdens associated with the system.

Building Notices

One of the proposals in the consultation paper is to stop the use of Building Notices for major domestic projects, such as extensions and conversions. Even though the DCLG did not raise the misuse of Building Notices in the pre-consultation paper they published last year, it is apparent that there is great deal of support for this proposal in the construction industry. Clearly, before they can seriously consider making these changes, it is critical that the public is properly engaged and understand what is being proposed. Therefore, DCLG are launching a mini-survey for the public on the issue of limiting Building Notices and are asking for your participation.
