Achieving Equity Strategy

The Council's new Achieving Equity Strategy sets out how the Council intends to meet and exceed the minimum legal requirements as set out in the Equality Act 2010 and the additional Public Sector Duty by striving to achieve equity, rather than equality.

This strategy demonstrates the Councils commitment to continue to move from equality of opportunity to equity of opportunity in our employment practices and service delivery.  The Council is also committed to work with partners to achieve equity.

The Council agreed the new strategy in January 2024 and also agreed that a baseline assessment against the Equality Framework for Local Government should be undertaken before an action plan can be developed.  The action plan will set out how the Council will implement the objectives and commitments set out in the strategy and will be shared to this page once it has been agreed.

Equality framework

The Council works towards the Equality Framework for Local Government. This is a tool used by local authorities to ensure that they are meeting their obligations under the Equality Act including the Public Sector Equality Duties.

The Framework has four main areas:

  • Understanding and working with your community
  • Leadership and organisational commitment
  • Responsive services and customer care
  • Diverse and engaged workforce

There are three levels of achievement within the Framework: developing, achieving and excellent.
