Council saddles up for National Bike Week 2010
Released on 23 June 2010
Staff from Surrey Heath Borough Council opted for a greener and healthier way to work on Tuesday June 22 by taking part in a Cycle to Work Day as part of National Bike Week 2010 (19-27 June).
Held annually, it's the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, aiming to promote cycling and highlight how easily it can fit into our daily lives.
Seventeen employees took part in the event covering a total of 72 miles and saving approximately 33,368g of carbon emissions by ditching their cars. Last year the council held a similar event and saved an estimated 20,626g.
Leigh Thornton Surrey Heath's Green Space Manager said: "The main aim of Cycle to Work Day was to reduce our carbon emissions and to be kinder to our environment.
"I hope that this event will encourage people to use their bikes more often and also highlight how cycling is a great form of exercise."
