The Main Square car park is set to benefit from improvements that will modernise the multi-storey car park in Camberley town centre.
This week Surrey Heath Borough Council's decision-making executive agreed to go ahead with improvement work that will make it easier and safer for people to use.
Enhancements to the Main Square Car Park will include:
- New lighting that will replace the current system with more efficient lights leading to reduced energy bills whilst providing a better quality of light for drivers and pedestrians.
- Installing CCTV to boost security for users and the vehicles as well as combat anti-social behaviour and vandalism to car park property.
- Refurbishing the main stairway leading from the car park to the town centre with repainted walls, and repaired windows, doors and handrails.
The improvements are scheduled to be completed by December 2010.
Portfolio holder for the built environment, Cllr Chris Rowbotham said: "We want visitors to have good facilities for car parking and these enhancements will improve the car parks for drivers and pedestrians.
"By upgrading the existing lighting system, the resulting reductions to the electricity consumption will enable the council to reduce its carbon footprint, as well as reduce costs."
Life Care Plans will be developed for both the Main Square and Knoll Road multi storey car parks to enable a considered and systematic approach to the future procurement of improvement and maintenance works to extend the life expectancy of both car parks.
