Surrey Heath athletes excel at the Surrey Sports Awards

Zak Jesse - Young Male Sports Personality of the Year 2009Athletes from Surrey Heath were rewarded for their outstanding sporting achievements at the 2009 Surrey Sports Awards held at Pennyhill Park on Friday 9 October.

The evening celebrated the thousands of participants, volunteers and organisers that make sport happen in Surrey, with special recognition of the achievements of eleven category winners.

Winners of the Surrey Heath Sports Awards, which were held on 8 July 2009 were nominated for the Surrey wide commendation. Five Surrey Heath athletes were shortlisted across four categories, with three going on to win an award.

Nominees from Surrey Heath won three out of eleven awards:
Zak Jesse (Skiing) - Young Sports Personality of the Year
Valley End Village (Cricket Club Cup Team) - Sports Team of the Year
Lucy Brown (Surrey Heath Netball Club) - Young Volunteer of the Year

And came in the top three in another two:
Jessica Carl (Judo) - Young Sports Personality of the Year
Sophie Johnstone (Judo) - Sports Personality of the Year

Portfolio holder for arts and leisure, Councillor Wynne Price said: "I was very proud to see so many of Surrey Heath's athletes picking up awards at this year's Surrey Sports Awards.

"This event is a great opportunity to recognise sporting achievements made by individuals and teams across the county and to reward them for their dedication and support in helping to make sport happen in Surrey."
