Make a splash with free swimming in Surrey Heath

Released on 21 October 2009

Image of person swimmingFree swimming for people aged 16 and under and anyone aged 60 and over will be available through a new scheme offered by Surrey Heath Borough Council from 1st November.

Both age groups can take the plunge at the Arena Leisure Centre free of charge after registering for a membership card enabling access to the pool.

The council is offering the free swimming scheme, which will run until June 2011, in partnership with DC Leisure who manages the Arena on its behalf.

An initial registration fee of £2 per person applies but after that swimmers can visit as often as they like during public swimming sessions.

People registered can enjoy general swimming sessions, family and fun sessions, as well as lane swimming where some adult only age restrictions may apply.

Portfolio holder for arts and leisure Councillor Wynne Price said: "Swimming is one of the country's most popular sporting activities and this is a very exciting time in the build up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

"We are very pleased to provide this great free offer which is an excellent opportunity for people young and old to have fun, get active and enjoy swimming."

Daniel Walker General Manager of the Arena said: 'This is great news for both existing customers and local residents who may not have used the centre before. We look forward to welcoming the many over 60's and families who we anticipate will take advantage of this fantastic offer.'

People can start registering for the scheme from Sunday November 1 by completing an application form in person at the Arena Leisure Centre. Those 60 or over will need to bring proof of age by way of a photo driving licence, pension book or passport and those aged 14 to 16 will need to show a birth certificate or passport.
