Crest Nicholson Regeneration Opens in a new windowand Standard Life Investments Opens in a new window have started construction on The Atrium, their £130 million mixed-use scheme in Camberley, bringing new shops, a cinema, bowling, cafés, restaurants and new homes to the town centre.
The first phase of construction, which begins today, involves the boring of over 1,000 piles throughout the seven-acre site, using excavators and a piling rig. The piles will subsequently be filled with concrete and used to support the steel frame forming the structure of The Atrium's buildings. The erection of the steel framework is due to begin by the end of the year, with the first new shops on Park Street scheduled to open in time for Christmas 2007 and the other facilities over the course of the following year.
Martin Mortimer, Development Director of Crest Nicholson Regeneration, said: "We have reached yet another important milestone on the way to completely transforming this part of Camberley town centre. We are now well on the way to delivering the scheme that Camberley deserves and has waited for for so long.
"In the four years since we came on board, we have worked closely with Surrey Heath Borough Council to develop plans for a vibrant town centre that everyone in Camberley can enjoy and be proud of. We are now pressing ahead with building work with the aim of opening the first stores at The Atrium in time for Christmas 2007.
"The Atrium will have something for everyone: a wide selection of well-known stores, high quality family entertainment and top notch dining, all in an attractive and accessible town centre location."
Cllr Richard Brooks, Corporate Portfolio Holder at Surrey Heath Borough Council added: "We are laying the foundations for a future Camberley with vastly improved shops, and leisure facilities which will appeal to all residents and revitalise the town centre. The Atrium Liaison Forum has proved invaluable for sharing information and I know that all parties involved will do everything possible to minimise the effects and to progress the development as quickly and smoothly as possible."
The Atrium is a joint venture between Crest Nicholson Regeneration and Surrey Heath Borough Council. Standard Life Investments is providing financial backing for the commercial element of the scheme.
The development is set to extend and revitalise Camberley's town centre, offering a wider choice of shops and leisure along with 217 apartments. A number of leading retailers and leisure operators - including Vue Opens in a new window, Bowlplex, Opens in a new window Next Opens in a new window, Virgin Opens in a new window, Cafe Rouge and Nandos Opens in a new window - have already committed to The Atrium.
Laing ORourke Opens in a new window is the main construction contractor at The Atrium.
