Brilliant effort by Camberley ‘beginners’ triathlon’ competitors

More than 60 competitors swam, cycled and ran their way around Camberley in the second Specsavers GO-TRI at the Arena Leisure Centre events on Sunday (22 April).

GO-TRI is an introduction to triathlon aimed specifically at beginners, and provides a platform for those looking to improve their fitness or get involved in the sport.

With short, manageable distances, GO-TRI Camberley featured a 200m swim in the Arena swimming pool, an 8km cycle through the flat and flowing roads of Camberley, before finishing with a 2km run around London Road Recreation Ground.

Those taking part had to cope with unseasonably warm temperatures for April, but followed advice to stay hydrated, and still managed to post some impressive times.

Darren Hurn crossed the finish line in first place in a fantastic time of 27mins 4sec closely followed by Ian Coates who also broke the 30-minute mark.

Following the success of last year's inaugural GO-TRI Camberley event, this year a Junior Aquathlon event was also held alongside the adult triathlon.

A two-stage swimming and running event open to 11-15 year-olds, the aquathlon saw competitors complete a 200m swim followed by a 2km run – the perfect introduction to multi-sport events for youngsters.

Both events were organised by the Council’s Business Services department in partnership with the Arena Leisure Centre and Go-Tri, supported by Specsavers and British Triathlon.

Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Business Cllr Craig Fennell said: “We’re delighted that this second-ever Specsavers GO-TRI at the Arena Leisure Centre has gone so well.

“It's all part of the Council's commitment to sports development and encouraging an active, healthy community.

"With such a great response from the public, we hope that we can bring more events like this to Surrey Heath in the future.”

Those taking part also had the opportunity to pick up some tips from GB Age Group triathlete Samantha Taylor, who came along to lend her support to the event.

Samantha, who has received funding from the Surrey Heath Sports Council, also receives training facilities support from the Arena Leisure Centre.

Plans are underway for Camberley Sprint Triathlon event on 23 September – to keep up to date with future triathlon-related events in the Borough go to www.surreyheath.gov.uk/tri, and follow SHBC on Facebook and Twitter.
