Illustrated Talks

Bagshot village - Man with horse and cartThe Museum can provide a number of talks for local groups and societies. All are illustrated with slides and can be adjusted to run from 50 to 70 minutes, depending on the time available. No formal charge is made but a donation is appreciated (suggested level £20). The speaker can provide their own projectors and extension lead, and a screen by arrangement. For most talks, transport is requested.

Please note that, due to the level of demand, Museum talks often get booked up many months in advance, so good notice is helpful!

Change In Frimley and Frimley Green
Photographs illustrating how the appearance of these historic villages has changed from the late 19th century to the present

West End In History
A look at this historic Surrey Heath village, which developed from a collection of scattered hamlets, each with its own character, into a tightly -knit community in its own right.

A visual history and tour of the Borough from 1865 to the present day, drawn from the Museum's extensive photographic collections. A reminder of how the area has changed and is still evolving.

More from the Museum's photographic collection, this time looking at local personalities, curiosities, landmarks, unusual views and aspects of life in our Borough in the past which have now been lost.

Pastimes & hobbies, sports, music and drama, outings, highdays and holidays: a wealth of slides to illustrate how we made our own amusements in Surrey Heath in times gone by

Open All Hours
A look at how we used to shop, based on local photos and reminiscences It begins by looking back to the days when bills only had to be paid quarterly, and local specialist retailers included haberdashers, ironmongers and military tailors, and then traces some of the major changes over the years.

The Shape Of Women, 1700 to 1900
Two centuries of women's fashion, looking at how different periods in history emphasised different parts of the woman's body, and how fashion developed into a interest for the masses rather than the privileged few, through technological advancements and changes in social viewpoints.

"So What Do You Actually Do All Day?"
An introduction to the Museum's work, its collections and its range of public services and how it developed from one man's collection. Plus a glimpse behind the scenes, including how items are acquired, some of the stories behind the exhibits and how we try to interest the next generation..

The Artist's Eye
An attractively illustrated talk about the Museum's art and craft collection which includes works from 1820 - 2008, many of which have been acquired with the help of the Friends of Surrey Heath Museum.

Aspects Of Victorian Childhood
The life of a child in the Victorian and Edwardian period varied greatly according to family circumstances. This talk looks at that varied existence with reference to the home, schooling and toys. Local images are included whenever possible.

"One Of The Healthiest Places In England"
The development of Camberley and Yorktown, from the establishment of the Military Colleges and the Staff College, Camberley's rise as a health resort, and on through later development up to the present day.
