Surrey Youth Games 2009

The under-nines mixed rugby team in action.Teams of sporty youngsters from across Surrey Heath enjoyed success, sunshine and healthy competition at the weekend (June 20 and 21) as the 13th Surrey Youth Games got underway in Guildford.

Youngsters aged from seven to 15 and representing all 11 districts and boroughs in Surrey gathered together to compete for medals and trophies in a range of athletic and sporting activities, from squash to boccia - a game for those with disabilities.

Surrey Heath's success in this competition continued previous years' achievements and more than 150 competitors from the borough took part.

There were gold medals for the girls under 13s hockey team, who didn't concede a single goal during the whole tournament and for whom this was their first time as overall winners. The under-11s mixed hockey team also claimed the top spot for the first time, with no goals conceded.

Bronze medals went to both the borough's under-11s mixed netball side, the under-nines mixed rugby team and the under-15s mixed Boccia event.

Both the Mayor of Surrey Heath Cllr Craig Fennell and the portfolio holder for leisure Cllr Wynne Price attended the event and were greatly impressed by the standard of competition. Cllr Fennell said: "Surrey Youth Games has become a regular fixture in the council's diary and the fact that we have continued our success this year is excellent.

"It was a pleasure to enjoy the sporting achievements in such good weather and to see the positive effects on so many young people taking part in the competition. These go beyond lifestyle benefits or exercise - the social skills, self-esteem building and discipline the youngsters learn in participating in the Surrey Youth Games will stand them in good stead for the future."

We are proud to be supported by Lakeside Country Club.
