Surrey Heath Sports Awards 2011

The winners of the Surrey Heath Sports Awards were announced at a ceremony in the Camberley Theatre on Sunday 23rd October.

Organised by Surrey Heath Borough Council, the awards honour people from all over the borough who have excelled in sports including football, judo and netball.

Nominations were put forward by local clubs, coaches, schools and National Governing Bodies (NGBs).

Held at the Camberley Theatre, the awards ceremony was attended by hundreds of players, coaches and volunteers, as well as the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Tim Dodds who presented a number of awards.

Councillor Dodds said: "We're delighted with the outstanding level of talent highlighted at the awards which is a great way to celebrate the success of the borough's sporting stars. I would like to congratulate all the winners who are fantastic role models. They should all feel very proud of their hard work and achievements."

All award winners will be automatically entered into the county-wide Surrey Sports Awards which in 2010 saw Surrey Heath land five category winners.

The Surrey Heath Sports Awards were kindly supported this year by the Arena Leisure Centre, Catch Telecom, Dayla, Lifestyle Fitness Lightwater, Multisports 4 Schools, Pennyhill Park Hotel, HigherGround Flooring and the council's Greenspace team.

 

The Winners were:

Young Sports Team: Surrey Heath Scorpions under 14s (Netball) Young Sports Team: Surrey Heath Scorpions under 14s (Netball)

  • Won the Charters Under 14 League only losing 1 match with a goal difference of +339.
  • Won the Middlesex U'14 League without losing a match and remained unbeaten in the Charters Under 14 Summer League.
  • The squad combined with 3 other players to form the Surrey Heath Senior Netball Team that won Gold at the Surrey Youth Games.
  • Despite losing a key player at the start of the season the small squad of 7 continued to train hard and perform well showing great commitment because they had to turn up for every match as 7 is the minimum number of players.

Sports Team: Camberley Judo Club Elite Team

  • Members of the team have been selected to represent Great Britain at Under 20, Under 23 and Senior Level.
  • 3 Members of the team represented Great Britain at the recent World Championships and 5 are on course for a London 2012 place as they are currently the Senior British Champions.
  • Despite their training and competition commitments they still find time to provide free demonstrations across the borough at fetes and events.

SSports Club: L&G Acrobatic Gymnastics Club, Camberley ports Club: L&G Acrobatic Gymnastics Club, Camberley

  • The club holds Gym mark accreditation
  • The clubs coaches deliver after-school clubs in local primary schools, sessions in private schools, sessions for disabled people and judge local inter-school competitions.
  • The club actively supports coach and judge development through the formal route of subsidised Level 1's & 2's, but more informally through mentoring and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Many of the clubs coaches and judges are ex-gymnasts or club members parents.
  • The club offers opportunities for people aged 3 upwards from recreational to elite level competitions.

Disability Sports Award: Natasha Hall (R-U-Able2)

  • Disability Sports Award: Natasha Hall (R-U-Able2) with Cllr Charlotte MorleyHas worked with a number of charities to provide people of all abilities with the opportunity to take part in sport and leisure activities, in particular Swimming, Skiing and Athletics.
  • Spends an enormous amount of her own time promoting new sporting opportunities through R-U-Able-2 and other service providers.
  • Has suffered with confidence issues with regards to taking part in sport in the past, but has overcome these to be a role model for other people that suffer similar issues.
  • Is training to be a Boccia instructor so that she can increase participation in the sport.

Young Volunteer of the Year: Chloe Balcombe (Netball)

  • Achieved her Level 1 Coaching qualification at 16 and has since volunteered at least 2 ½ hours every week to coaching the under 11's and 13's at the netball club. In addition to this she has attended every match and tournament which has meant getting up at 7am when she only finished work at 3am.
  • As a result of Chloe's coaching and relationship with the girls the squad grew from 13 to 25 and had their most successful year to date by coming 2nd in the Middlesex League and having 5 girls nominated for academy training.
  • Chloe is passionate about developing her own coaching by taking her Level 2 qualification, but also about developing the sport in Surrey Heath where she has coached school, club and Surrey Youth Games teams in the last year.

Coach of the Year: Gemma Evans (Gymnastics)

  • Is a Level 3 British Gymnastics Senior Acrobatic Coach, a National Tumble Judge & Regional Acrobatic Judge.
  • Coaches all ages from 1 to 18 and offers a progressive pathway into prep, display and elite squads.
  • Took squads to the British Championships and World Gymnaestrada in Switzerland.
  • Coached countless individuals from L&G Acrobatic Gymnastics Club who have won Regional and National medals.

Young Sports Personality: Jessica Carl (Judo)

  • Ranked No1 for her age and weight in Great Britain.
  • Member of the England squad and won bronze medals at the Dutch and Eindhoven Open Tournaments.
  • Helps to train the younger members of her club acting as a role model for them.
  • Won every UK ranking event in 2011 and remains unbeaten in any fight in this country.

Sports Personality of the Year: Alistair Rice (Gymnastics) with Mayor of Surrey Heath Tim Dodds Sports Personality: Alistair Rice (Gymnastics)

  • Cut back on his training to concentrate on studies and coaching, but still managed to finish 2nd in the Men's 15+ Elite Grade 2 tumble at the Regional Championships and 2nd in Great Britain at the National Championships.
  • Has been a true role model to younger gymnasts in his performances, coaching style and studies as he recently secured a place at Oxford University.
  • Alistair's performance greatly improved over the year as he was committed to what he needed to do. Despite this he still found time to support the coaching team at L&G with County and Club competitions.

Outstanding Service: David Dimsdale (Cricket)

  • Joined the club 46 years ago and has been essential to both the running and spirit of the club ever since.
  • Captained every senior side as well as undertaking the roles of coach, secretary, chairman, vice chairman, bar manager and league representative.
  • Now retired he continues to coach the youngsters and spends countless hours nurturing the square.

The awards were also used as an opportunity to recognise the achievements of the boroughs teams who entered the Surrey Youth Games. Four specific awards were given out to deserving individuals in addition to medals that were presented to all of the competitors in recognition of representing the borough at the event.

Individual Performance: Tauheed Mazloom (Tennis)
Most Improved Performance: Rebecca Dugmore (Tag Rugby)
Volunteer of the Games: Sandra Parnell (Netball)
Most Supportive School: Ravenscote
