Is it possible to give a tree New Life?
Yes it is! Just take a visit to Watchetts Recreation Ground, Camberley.
A large mature beech tree which has grown in the grounds for at least fifty years had to be removed last year as it was infected with fungus and was rapidly dying back. Rather than completely removing the tree, the main trunk has been retained.
Wood sculptor, Tom Harvey, was commissioned to carve this trunk with images of wildlife that may be found in the park. The trunk will be protected with wood preserver and it is expected to survive for at least another 10 years.
The work has just been completed and complements the existing totem pole situated near the entrance which was created some years ago by an artist working with children in Watchetts Middle School.
A considerable number of new trees have been planted in the park over recent years to ensure continued tree cover for future generations to enjoy.
The work can be freely viewed at any time as the park is always open.
Other carvings can be found at Watchetts recreation ground, the totem pole near the main drive was inspired by a similar work at Frimley Lodge park created by children on the Council's summer play scheme. This totem can now be found against the main pavilion wall at Frimley Lodge Park.
The totem at Watchetts was created by a chainsaw artist working with children at Watchetts Junior School .The work is called 'Park life' and reflects various activities ,with flora and fauna that may be found in the park .The pole was unveiled by the Mayor on 9 July 1999
