Reporting an Untaxed car in the street. Whom do I contact?

Question

Reporting an Untaxed car in the street. Whom do I contact?

Answer

Untaxed vehicles should be reported to the DVLA.

If you believe a vehicle to be abandoned, you should report it to Surrey Heath Borough Council for further investigation. You can report this on 01276 707330 or online:

The legislation under which the Council has powers to remove abandoned cars is as follows:

  • Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978
  • Sections 99 to102 Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984
  • Removal and Disposal of Vehicles Regulations 1986
  • Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005

This legislation is concerned with environmental issues, not legal ones. There is scope for the Council to take action against owners in addition to claiming from them the costs of disposal of their abandoned car.
