Music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus
Lyrics by Tim Rice, Based on an idea by Tim Rice
An amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French Limited
Chess is a highly acclaimed musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, formerly of ABBA. It develops the ancient and distinguised game of chess into a metaphor for romantic rivalries and East-West political intrigue during the Cold War.
The story revolves around a romantic triangle between two players, one Russian, the other American, in a world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. From the Tyrol to Thailand, the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves to the pulse of a monumental musical score.
Several numbers from the show including One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well, became international hits in their own right.
