Recycling rate- how is it measured ?
Councils may often quote their recycling rate in terms of a percentage. The recycling rate is the quantity of recyclable waste diverted from landfill.
All councils in the country are measured in the same way therefore direct comparisons can be made.
'Recyclable materials' include newspapers, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, textiles, foil, shoes, cartons, compostable waste (food and garden), books and CDs.
How is Surrey Heath performing ?
For 2008/9, about 32% of household waste was recycled*. The remainder was sent to the landfill site near Albury.
How does this compare with other councils ?
The table below summarises the official (DEFRA) recycling performance of neighbouring boroughs. Since the start of the Recycling and Refuse Collection Service in September 2009, the amount of recycling collected has increased significantly. This should be reflected in the 2009/10 recycling rate.
| Council | Recycling rate (%) 2008/9 | Recycling rate (%) 2007/8 | Recycling rate (%) 2006/7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woking Borough Council | 44.10 | 40.82 | 38.39 |
| Bracknell Forest Borough Council | 44.44 | 39.70 | 35.49 |
| Guildford Borough Council | 40.63 | 39.69 | 34.06 |
| Hart District Council | 38.83 | 39.60 | 30.85 |
| Surrey Heath Borough Council | 32.22 | 30.06 | 29.8 |
| Rushmoor Borough Council | 26.15 | 25.79 | 22.47 |
| Runnymede Borough Council | 25.09 | 23.29 | 18.56 |
*Recycling taken to Community Recycling Centres (CRCs)
Recycling rates do not include the materials recycled at CRCs which are run by the County Council. In Surrey Heath, the CRCs are at Wilton Road (Camberley) and Swift Lane (Bagshot). This means that we are actually recycling more than 30% !
Since the start of the new recycling service (September 2009) the amount of waste being recycled has inceased significantly.
Thank you for recycling.
It really does make a difference.
