Christmas Recycling Tips

Food Waste
Kitchen waste for recycling

This year, your Turkey bones and Christmas leftovers can be recycled by using your green food waste container.

Help to keep your container clean by wrapping your food waste in newspaper or by using Compostable liners.

Remember- your food waste is collected EVERY week

Glass

Recycling Bottles

In the UK alone we use an extra 750 million bottles/jars and 500 million drinks cans over Christmas.

  • You may find that you have more glass than usual over the Christmas period. This can be put in your green recycling bin.
  • Remember, there are still bottle banks around the borough if needed.

Wrapping Paper and Greeting Cards

  • Old Christmas cards can make useful gift tags for next year. Can you think of another creative way of reusing your cards...?
  • Shops and superstores often collect cards to benefit a charity- keep your eyes peeled!
  • Wrapping paper & cards can be placed in your green bin for recycling. When it comes to wrapping paper, if you can tear it, you can recycle it!

Cardboard Packaging

Flat packed cardboard

Remember to flatten your boxes and remove any (expanded) Polystyrene

Christmas Trees

When you have taken down the tinsel and packed the lights away, you could take your real Christmas tree, no artificial trees please, to the Community Recycling Centres Sites in Surrey Heath for it to be recycled into compost.

Shoes and Textiles

Shoe and Textile Recycling Bank

Unwanted clothes and shoes would be very welcome at textile banks where they will get reused.

Books and CDs

Book Recycling Bank

The British Heart Foundation Book and Music Banks accept good condition books, DVDs, CDs and records.

Surrey Heath Borough Council wishes you a Happy Christmas and a green New Year!
