Flooding Advice Preparation

Prepare sandbags, your local builder's merchant can supply materials. Don't rely on supplies from the Council after the event, they will be trying to respond to everyone else in the area wanting them too and roads may be blocked and impassable.

The Environment Agency is now better prepared to assist with information and advice regarding flooding:  Floodcall Line 0645 88 11 88.

Move people pets and valuables to a safe place - upstairs if possible.

If you need assistance from the Council call 01276 707500. Please remember resources are limited and will be severely stretched during a serious flood event. DO try to provide for yourself and be prepared.

Contact your insurers. Take advice from them regarding correct method of drying out the house. Too rapid drying can significantly worsen damage. Retain damaged goods for possible inspection by your insurers.

Discard any food which has been in contact with flood water - it will certainly be contaminated.

Mains water supplies should be safe. Run the water for a few minutes before use. If in doubt, check with the water company.

Get expert advice before turning on gas and electricity and operating appliances..

Beware of traders/builders/workmen who call and offer repairs or other services; flood events attract rogue callers.
