Recycle Now Composter LogoComposting is a very worthwhile exercise- at least 20% of your household waste could be composted. If you are new to composting it is worth looking at the composters on offer (see discounted composters section below).

Much of the 'waste' from the kitchen and garden can be composted. Examples include;

  • Tea bags
  • Grass cuttings
  • Vegetable peelings (including lettuce and cabbage leaves)
  • Old flowers
  • Fruit scraps (including citrus peel)
  • Nettles
  • Coffee grounds and filter paper
  • Spent bedding plants
  • Comfrey leaves
  • Rhubarb leaves
  • Young annual weeds (e.g. chickweed and speedwell)
  • Pond algae and seaweed (in moderation)

Also, don't forget your shredded paper- this makes a useful contribution particularly when compost can become slimey with all the summer grass cuttings!

The key to successful composting is getting the balance right. Composting can be easy and effective simply keep the balance of wet and dry ingredients. If you are already composting and need help with your 'mixture' there is help out there for you! Firstly, you can look at the Compost Trouble section or you can contact Peter Hill who is the home composting advisor for this area Opens in a new window and is always happy to help.

Composting is encouraging natural breakdown through adequate ventilation and insulating the waste to keep the compost temperature high enough to encourage decomposition. Shredding larger items speeds up composting as does turning regularly with a fork. Earthworms eventually complete the breakdown.
