Like a healthy plant, Surrey Heath's Green Waste Club has grown strongly, having collected around 700 tonnes of garden waste since it began last April as a three year pilot run by Surrey Heath Borough Council and its contractor Verdant.
The good news is that now it is even better value for residents to join the Green Waste Club with a 2008 offer for six months' membership of £30, including VAT and delivery of a wheeled bin (equivalent to £1.15 a week). The standard 18-month membership remains available at a cost of £75.
The Green Waste Club recently welcomed its 1,500th member. Joan Cormican, from Frimley, signed up for the club in January and received her membership free as a reward for being the milestone member. She said: "I decided to join the club as I am on my own and I can't drive, so I felt this would be an easy and convenient way of getting rid of my garden waste."
With gardens springing back to life, they'll soon be needing clipping, mowing, pruning, snipping and cutting. The Club is an easy, convenient and affordable scheme for residents to get rid of all that green waste in an environmentally-friendly way. Rather than having to bag it all up and then drive to an amenity site, residents can simply fill their dedicated wheelie bin and let Verdant do all the heavy lifting.
Ninety-year-old Mary Wheeler, of Mytchett Road, Mytchett, has been reaping the scheme's benefits since joining the club in November. She said: "I was unable to move the old garden sacks on my own when they were full, but the bin is much easier to manoeuvre around the garden. The scheme is very good value for money and makes gardening easier and even more enjoyable."
David Bull, 73, of Riverside Avenue in Lightwater, agrees: "The bin is very convenient to use, it requires less physical energy and allows me to dispose of my garden waste on my doorstep, with collections every two weeks, rather than having to take it to the tip."
The initiative follows increasing pressure from Government and the EU to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Councils that do not meet their proposed recycling targets face tough financial penalties that could affect the council tax paid by local people.
Residents who find the cost difficult or have only a small garden have told us of the ways they adapt to join. These include:
- Sharing a bin and the cost with a neightbour
- Letting their families treat them to a bin by paying the cost for them.
