Recycle Now Logo CollectionRecycling rate- how is it measured ?
Councils may often quote their recycling rate in terms of a percentage. The recycling rate is the quantity of recyclable waste diverted from landfill.

'Recyclable materials' include newspapers, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, textiles, foil, shoes, cartons, green waste books and CDs.

All councils in the country are measured in the same way therefore direct comparisons can be made.

How is Surrey Heath currently performing ?
For 2007/8, 30% of household waste was recycled*. The remaining 70% was sent to the landfill site near Albury- much of this 'waste' contains materials that could have been reused or recycled...

How does this compare with other councils ?
The table below summarises the recycling performance (recycling rate) of adjacent boroughs for 2006/7. Once the figures for 2007/8 are available, the table below will be updated.

Council2006/7 Recycling rate (%)
Woking Borough Council38.39
Bracknell Forest Borough Council35.49
Guildford Borough Council34.06
Hart District Council30.85
Surrey Heath Borough Council29.8
Rushmoor Borough Council22.47
Runnymede Borough Council18.56

*Recycling taken to Community Recycling Centres (CRCs)
Recycling rates do not include the materials recycled at CRCs which are run by the County Council. In Surrey Heath, the CRCs are at Wilton Road (Camberley) and Swift Lane (Bagshot). This means that we are actually recycling more than 30% !

Thank you for recycling

it really does make a difference
