02 September 2010
The Local Government Act 2000 provided for a new statutory framework governing the conduct of local government members and employees. As part of this framework, all relevant authorities in England, of which Surrey Heath Borough Council is one, are required to establish standards committees. By the terms of the Act, the Government can regulate for the way in which such committees are to be set up and operate.
This Committee also helps promote good practice in relation to ethics and probity. It currently meets up to five times a year and comprises four Councillors, two Independent Representatives and two representatives of the Parish Councils in the Borough. Under a recently adopted Council protocol, Independent Representatives will be appointed for a term of office of three years, at the end of which they may seek re-appointment in a selection process with other interested people. The periods of appointment of the independent representatives are as follows:
To May 2012 - Mr John Tibbles
To May 2011 - Mr Graham Davies
The parish council representative is appointed annually.
