Local Economy

Camberley High StreetAgainst this background it is important to ensure the continued availability of facilities to serve local people, and to protect and enhance the Borough's largest centre, Camberley. With a generally affluent and highly mobile population, there continues to be significant growth in personal disposable incomes. The need to translate this into additional local shopping and leisure provision to serve the catchment area, ensuring the continued economic success of Camberley, will start to be addressed by The Atrium development.

This development will provide additional retail outlets, leisure provision for young people and those without access to a car, and residential opportunities within Camberley town centre with affordable homes included in the design. The Council is also keen to work with The Mall regarding further investment in Main Square, the High Street traders and with partners to invest in a new A30 frontage for Camberley.

The economic vitality of the area, both urban and village centres, is of importance if the Borough is to maintain current economic health in the most sustainable way. In the initial years of this plan, it will be important to solve the issues surrounding the protection of bird habitats in Special Protection Areas (SPAs) to both deliver the correct level of housing and avoid the serious negative economic affect a house building moratorium will visit upon the Borough.
