FAQs - Empty Property

Questions include:
Do I get any discounts if my property is empty?
Can I leave furnishings and personal effect in the property?

Q: Do I get any discounts if my property is empty?
A:
If the property is fully empty you will need to pay a 50% charge following an initial 6 month exemption from Council Tax.

If the property is empty due to someone dying or it being repossessed the exemption from Council Tax is different. Click here for a full list of the exemptions and conditions that apply.

Click here to let us know your property has become empty. Please let us know as soon as it becomes empty to avoid overpaying us.

Q: Can I leave furnishings and personal effects in the property?
A:
If a property is furnished but no one's main residence you can get a 10% discount from the Council Tax. You won't qualify for the six months exemption period unless the property is fully empty. One of the Council's Inspectors will visit your property to make an inspection once you notify us your property has become empty.
