Q: What is Council Tax and how is it calculated?
A: Council Tax is an annual tax which is based on the value of your property. It helps to pay for local services.
Q: What does my Council Tax pay for?
A: Council tax pays for services provided by Surrey Heath Borough Council, Surrey County Council Opens in a new window, Surrey Police Authority Opens in a new window and where appropriate the Parish Councils of Bisley, Chobham, West End and Windlesham. Only 13p in every pound received goes directly to Surrey Heath Borough Council, 74p to Surrey County Council and 12p to Surrey Police Authority and 1p goes to the Parish Councils. Q: What band is my property in?
A: The Inland Revenue Valuation Office Agency has placed each property into one of eight bands according to its open market value on 1 April 1991. Your Council Tax bill will show you which band your home is in alternatively click here to find what band you are in Opens in a new window.
Q. What are the valuation bands?
A Up to and including £40,000
B £40,001 - £52,000
C £52,001 - £68,000
D £68,001 - £88,000
E £88,001 - £120,000
F £120,001 - £160,000
G £160,001 - £320,000
H More than £320,000
Q: I feel that my property is in the wrong band, what can I do?
A: You will need to appeal directly to the Inland Revenue Valuation Office Agency. Click here for further information on how to appeal. Opens in a new window
If you make an appeal, whilst it is is being considered, you will need to continue paying your Council Tax on your current banding. If your appeal is successful you will receive a refund of any overpaid Council Tax.

Q: I have a complaint about a local service, or I don't use a particular service, can I have a reduction in my Council Tax?
A: No, the Council Tax you pay contributes to a number of local services, and is not just a payment for the services you, as an individual, receive. Any complaint regarding a local service should be made to the relevant service for investigation. This may be Surrey Heath Borough Council, Surrey County Council, Surrey Police Authority or one of the Parish Councils.
