Flu

Is a highly infectious and very common viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes. It's not the same as the common cold. Flu is caused by a different group of viruses and symptoms tend to be more severe and last for longer.

You can catch flu - short for influenza - all year round, but it is especially common in winter, which is why it is also known as 'seasonal flu'.

Flu causes a sudden high temperature, headache and general aches and pains, tiredness and sore throat. You can also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and have a cough. Flu symptoms can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.

Norovirus

Better known as the winter vomiting bug, is the most common stomach bug in the UK, affecting people of all ages.

The virus, which is highly contagious, causes vomiting and diarrhoea. As there is no specific cure, you have to let it run its course, but it should not last more than a couple of days. If you get norovirus, make sure you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and practise good hygiene to help prevent it from spreading.

Food poisoning

Food poisoning is an illness caused by eating contaminated food. Most people will get better without the need for treatment.

In most cases, the food that causes the illness has been contaminated by bacteria, such as salmonella or E. coli, or a virus, such as the norovirus.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is an infection of the stomach and bowel (large intestine).
The most common symptoms are vomiting and repeated episodes of diarrhoea (three or more episodes within 24 hours).
