Mephedrone
Mephedrone is a relatively new drug and has yet to be made illegal in the UK. However in other countries it is illegal - Denmark, Finland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and Sweden - and its been linked to a death in Sweden in December 2008.
Effects: Little is known about the pharmacological effects of Mephedrone, but it is sold as a legal alternative to Ecstasy and has similar effects.
Appearance: In its pure form, Mephedrone consists of bright white crystals; if the substance is grey/yellow then it is contaminated. There should be little odour from the substance - if there is a strong odour, it means there may still be some poisonous chemical solvent residue inside. Pure 4-mmc should be free of poisonous chemical solvents and have virtually no smell.
Response: If you suspect a young person is using Mephedrone or if that young person discloses that they are using what you suspect to be Mephedrone (or any other licit or illicit substance) either at school or outside then please seek help and advice from the numbers below
