Housing in Surrey Heath

Surrey Heath Borough Council provide the following services for borough residents, and those with a connection to the area, who have a housing need:

  • a local housing register
  • homelessness assistance
  • a general housing advice service

The Joint Housing Register operated jointly with Accent Peerless and is open to qualifying applicants who have a housing need and wish to be nominated to a Housing Association property. The Register works on a points based system with points being awarded for such things as poor repair of a property and having to share facilities. Points for medical and social factors may also be awarded.

The homelessness assistance offered starts when the Council is approached by someone who is in danger of losing their home. The earlier people approach the Housing Needs section the more comprehensive the service provided will be.

Housing
Around two-thirds of the 80,000 population live in the urban part of the Borough which comprises one-third of the land.

A major housing survey was commissioned by the Borough Council during 2002 to help it make decisions on future housing needs in Surrey Heath.

With the results of the survey, which included 1,540 households, the Council was able to make decisions on how best to plan to meet both market and social housing needs. Surrey Heath is an area of high home ownership with homes to offer across the entire housing market.

Development
Social housing is provided by housing associations who work in partnership with Surrey Heath Borough Council. There are over 3,000 homes under the control of such associations.

Most of Surrey Heath's housing stock is relatively young, and well maintained. New house building over the past 20 years has been carefully planned and built. For example, recent development at Wellington Park in Camberley by Crest Homes (Eastern) offers a blend of innovative design and quality set in landscaping which complements the surroundings.

Housing Officers will try to assist on a range of housing issues, and if they are unable to provide the necessary level of advice they may know a man who can.

All advice is free and confidential
